A shoot from Jesse’s stump shall spring
and give us happy songs to sing.
A precious child of flesh and bone
for God has heard creation’s groan.
Rise! Lift your voice amid the throng.
God is our joyful justice song!
The spirit of the Lord shall rest
with righteousness upon his breast.
He comes with wisdom, pow’r, and might;
the fear of God his true delight.
He comes to set the captives free,
and release us from enmity.
The wolf shall live beside the sheep;
the leopard with the goat shall sleep;
the calf befriend the lion wild;
all led by but a little child.
Armies shall lay their weapons down,
and bow before God’s righteous crown.
Come see this sign of God’s design,
a plan born ‘fore the birth of time:
to save us from our wretched wrath
and set us on the peaceful path.
Let us unlearn the ways of war,
and seek shalom for evermore.
